Taita Alfredo Juajibioy

The son of Ramon Juajibioy and Maria Mutumbajoy, Taita Alfredo was born on the 29th of June 1945, in the Sibundoy Valley. At the age of five he was taken under the tutelage of his grandfather, Taita Pedro Mutumbajoy, the great chief of his village. Don Pedro concentrated the spiritual power of the plant teachers used in the occult sciences (“la ciencia”) of the jungle – plants like Yagé (Banisteriopsis sp.), Monchira, Borrachero (Brugmansia sp.), Paramomochichaja, Conejo gasca, Cocara – to acquire the necessary powers to become a “doctor shaman”, a shamanic healer.

Constantly immersed into the world of shamanic knowledge and practice, the young Alfredo felt the call, and received the strength and power to begin to work with the ancestral medicine of the jungle. When his eighty-five years old grandfather passed away, whilst he was still sixteen, he went to apprentice with Taita Higidio Peña, a great shaman, friend of his grandfather, who lived in a village of of the Caquetá region. He spent two years learning, practicing and advancing his knowledge of shamanic healing from Taita Higidio.

When he turned 18, with the skills he had acquired, he received the “crown of the occult science” – i.e. was appointed and recognised as a legitimate, proper shaman – from different Taitas as don Higidio Peña, don Higidio Piranga, don Juan Ascencio Castillo, don Cornelio Ocoaje, don Iberio Becerra, don Salvador Moreno and don José Jamioy.
After receiving this recognition Taita Alfredo began his work as shamanic healer following the path of the sacred (and secret) science of healing with plant teachers, offering his services to all those in need of healing, advice and help.

Sixty-five years on carrying the tradition, knowledge and experience of working with Yagé in a sacred and responsible manner, he has several apprentices following him and – at seventy – he still continues to help people in need.

Aside from being the guide of our Yagé retreats, Taita Alfredo treats various dis-eases, like cancer (depending on its evolutive stage), cancerous gastric ulcers, varicose veins, skin diseases, ulcerous dermatitis, injuries from mild concussion, epilepsy and addiction problems. In the realm of the magic, he treats cases of witchcraft and – in the realm of psycho-magic – he treats cases of jealousy and acts as counsellor and adviser to those seeking his help. The tradition is not lost…

In line with the shamanic healing tradition he belongs to, his work of counsellor often takes place in the course of the Yagé session, and is not an uncommon feature to see him seamlessly switching from the altered states of consciousness induced by the intoxication with Yagé, to talking and carefully advising a patient at length, as a father and a spiritual guide, during the ceremony.
